This book is about a batch of cookies that gets shared to their friends and family. The concepts of this activity will be:
Math - counting practice and using the concept and vocabulary words EQUAL, SAME and DIFFERENT. If you have older students this book can also be used for multiplication and division.
Social Emotional - Talk about sharing, how does it make you feel when you get to share with a friend? How does it make you feel when a friend shares with you?
Language Arts - Listening for information, Using the illustrations to gain information, Story retelling How many cookies do we have? How many people?
Fine Motor Skills: Students can draw circles, color to look like cookies and cut the cookies out. Give as much independence and you can, you might need to help them draw and cut out the cookies.
Lesson Suggestion: Read the book and discuss the social/emotional aspects of sharing the cookies as you read. During reading or after, turn back to the pages and count the number of cookies on each plate, discuss concept of SAME and EQUAL number of cookies. If you have older students joining you, you could add the multiplication and division, writing out and solving the problems.
After reading draw, color and cut out cookies, turn pages in the book, count and divide the cookies to match the book. Have them retell the story to you. Divide the cookies among your listeners and yourself.
You could make cookies. Snickerdoodles or sugar cookies would be an easy recipe with very few ingredients.
